Message from Sheriff Meade Press Releases Locate Registered Sex Offenders
Baker County was created in 1825 as Georgia's 61st county and was named after Colonel John Baker, a patriot of the Revolutionary War. The county seat is Newton, and was named after Sgt. John Newton, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. We have 4,000 residents and cover a total of 349 square miles in southwestern Georgia. Mainly an agricultural community, we produce peanuts, cotton, beef and poultry.

Baker County is home to several plantations, including the Pine Bloom and Tarva Plantations, both recorded in Georgia’s National Register of Historic Places. The largest in Baker County is the Ichauway Plantation. It was once owned by Coca-Cola magnate Robert Woodruff, but now houses the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center, which is one of the largest outdoor research centers in the world.

With deep roots, quite surroundings, and simple beauty, Baker County is a wonderful place to raise a family. Come visit us soon.
